Course Description

This 5-Day hands-on intensive course is intended to help project managers understand the concepts of C4SD and learn to use a tool to systematically plan effective C4SD strategic interventions through a step-by-step process.

Emphasis will be on how cultural, social, economic and political factors influence individual and groups’ choices and behaviors. Throughout the course, participants will learn how to analyze behavioral problems, set communication indicators that are measurable, design implementation strategies, and learn how to monitor and evaluate results-oriented C4SD projects.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • understand the important role that social communication plays in the successful implementation of their projects;
  • be able to describe the different components of Communication for Social Development (C4SD);
  • be able to identify substantial elements of the cultural, social, political and economic factors underlying individual and group behavior change;
  • be able to analyze the context, target groups and their social environments as well as the target groups' use of various types of communication media including social media;
  • be able to plan Communication for Social Development / Behavior Change Communication (C4SD/BCC) strategic interventions.

Modules/Topics Include

C4SD conceptual framework

Introduction to some of the most common theories and conceptual frameworks used for C4SD, including:

  • Social norms;
  • Diffusion of Innovations
  • Trans-theoretical Model (TTM) and Stages of Change
  • Health Belief Model (HBM)
  • Social Marketing (SM)
  • Socio-Ecological Model (SEM)
  • Policy Advocacy: Use of C4SD to influence policy-making within governments (such as population policy, aging policy, reproductive health policy, population and environment policy, etc.)
  • Theory of Change (TOC) as applied to planning of C4SD projects/programs

Introduction to use of social media for C4SD
